Gearhead!

OK, after spending about 3 hours this weekend at REI (on top of umpteen trips to EMS, multiple online orders from Patagonia and Sierra Trading Post; the latter is a great place for steals on outdoor / hiking gear!), I think it's official....I'm a gear head. I think I've read on no less than 100 websites that I'm supposed to pack light. This should be a challenge.

I'll post here a somewhat comprehensive list of what I'll be bringing and will try to revisit this entry post-trip to indicate what was most useful, in case any readers are considering making a similar trek!

  • Cargo duffel bag ("Big Yellow") borrowed from a colleague who did this trip a few years ago
  • Garbage bags and smaller plastic bags to keep items dry and dust-free
Other Miscellaneous (yet critical) Items
  • Lots of sunscreen (this is as close to the equator as I've ever been and at 19,341 ft., it's even stronger!
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • The usual toiletries - deodorant (especially for the Kili trek!), saline solution, glasses, extra contact lenses, toothpaste/toothbrush, make-up (don't want to scare the animals away), razors, shampoo & conditioner, dry shampoo for Kili, hairbrush, hair clips (I suspect there will be lots of ponytails and clips with limited access to hair dryers!),
  • Camping toilet paper (for Kili)
  • Face towelettes
  • Wet wipes

I'm sure there's more that I'm just not thinking of yet, but that's a pretty good start. I'll add on any additional items I forgot as I remember them. The key is not forgetting to pack any of this stuff. My bedroom floor looks like a microcosm of an EMS outlet!
